Lower back · Fusion
A lumbar fusion performed from the front of the body, reaching the disc without cutting through the muscles of the back.
Overview
In an ALIF, the lower spine is reached through an incision in the lower abdomen. The damaged disc is removed and replaced with a spacer filled with bone graft.
The front approach allows a larger spacer, which can help restore disc height and the natural curve of the lower back.
How it works
Step 1
Abdominal organs and vessels are gently moved aside to reach the front of the spine.
Step 2
The damaged disc is removed.
Step 3
A spacer with bone graft restores disc height and alignment.
Step 4
The vertebrae heal together; screws may be added for support.
Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
ALIF avoids the muscles of the back entirely, one of the reasons it is considered a muscle-sparing approach.
Conservative first
Dr. Record believes that surgery is not necessarily the first step for every patient. Whenever appropriate, she works with patients to explore non-operative and conservative treatment options first.
When conservative treatment does not provide sufficient relief — or when a patient would like to understand whether surgery may be appropriate — Dr. Record provides a comprehensive discussion of available surgical options.
Her goal is to identify the treatment approach that can help alleviate pain, restore function, and help patients return to the activities that matter to them.
